Pony Preschool is an introductory lesson program and a great starting point for young athletes aged 4–6. Our primary focus is to build confidence on and around the pony, and the entire approach and structure of the program is designed to achieve this outcome.

The program teaches the basics of riding — steering, go, stop, and trotting (posting, sitting, and two-point) — all through games, songs, and repetition.

What to Expect

  • Structured lessons with games and interactive activities
  • Trail rides through the farm (parents welcome to join on foot!)
  • Horsemanship lessons in the barn — grooming, feeding, care
  • If weather isn't cooperative, lessons move to the indoor riding arena

Our Approach

Instruction

All lessons are led by long-time Neverland team member and coach Maddie Whelan. Maddie has several years of experience introducing young riders to the sport and also leads our summer camp programs.

Over the last decade, our Head Coach Kelly, Maddie, and the extended Neverland team have introduced hundreds of young riders through Pony Preschool. During that time they've honed the curriculum into something that allows for a wide range of adaptations and progression while providing a warm, supportive environment.

In addition to the primary coach, there are 4 helpers (one for each rider) who lead the ponies, provide support and encouragement, and help ensure a safe experience. These helpers are some of our older, more experienced riders — it's an important part of our culture to have our athletes support the next generation.

Home Horse Shows

Twice a season, the entire Neverland barn comes together for a Home Horse Show — a big day at the farm where every program rides, families gather, and everyone celebrates how far the athletes have come.

For Pony Preschool athletes, there are two groups: newer riders participate in a helper-led lead-line class, while more experienced athletes show off their walk, trot, and steering with a bit more independence. Athletes dress in their show best (or costumes for the Halloween show!), and families turn the day into a potluck — everyone brings something to share.

It's one of the highlights of each season. Parents, grandparents, and siblings come out to cheer, and the energy across the farm is something special.
